Meme

Some time (a few months or so) ago, my brothertried to start a meme on his other blog where he wrote the first line of his top ten favourite books and readers would try to guess them and then put down the first line of their top ten books in their blogs. Heh. Seemed like a fun idea, just took me forever to get around to doing it.

Couldn't quite remember if it was the first line of the first chapter, or the intro counted. In any case, I've left it as the first line of each chapter.

1. This is my favourite book in all the world though I have never read it.

2. "I've watched through his eyes, listened through his ears, and I tell you he's the one. Or at least as close as we're going to get"

3. The house stood on a slight rise just on the edge of the village.

4. On February 24, 1815, the watchtower at Marseilles signaled the arrival of the three-master Pharaon, coming from Smyrne, Trieste and Naples.

5. No matter how hard you try you will never be able to grasp just how tiny, how spatially unassuming, is a proton.

6. Every life is different from any that has gone before it, and so is every death.

7. On 14 August 1571, a gigantic ship's pennant of silk damask passed through the congested streets of Naples.

8. To Sherlock Holmes she is always the woman.

9. War is a question of vital importance to the state, a matter of life and death, the road to survival or ruin.

10. In a village in La Mancha, the name of which I have no desire to call to mind, there lived not long since one of those gentlemen that kept a lance in a lance-rack, an old buckler, a lean hack, and a greyhound for coursing.

I know there is one or two that's the same as my brother's. Haha. Oh well?

no. 1 would have fit in nicely with "a home at the end of the world". it's a very dysfunctional book that leaves you highly depressed at the end.

and i'm gonna go out on a limb and say no. 8 is sherlock holmes...

No... 1 isn't quite a home at the end of the world. Haha. And yes, 8 is A Sherlock Holmes novel. Or... rather a short story but which one?
