The Da Vinci Code
A silly and fun piece of fluffy entertainment, loaded with incredible amounts of product placement. Seriously, it was insane how many the number of logos flashed up on the screen at you. Probably the best moment in the movie came when Tom Hanks, in London, turned to Aufrey Tatou and said (with great gravity, as if it were a matter of life and death), "I need to get to a library, quickly!" My friends and I, graduate students all, starting chuckling and then broke out into full laughter. We agreed later it would be our new catch phrase. Of course, I deplore the movie's startling inaccuracies. A professor of religious symbology who is well dressed? And well organised? Conversant with the latest technology? Gives an entertaining lecture? Which is packed? And can afford to stay at the Ritz? A retired English professor who has a 43" flat-screen monitor loaded with the latest technology, which he knows how to operate and which works flawlessly and quickly? How ridiculous. About the only two things which I felt were accurate about the lives of academics was, firstly, Tom Hanks' ridiculous psuedo-mullet haircut; and his pedantic arguments with Sir Ian McKellen. I enjoyed the CGI work. It was fun to flash back into the past as the historical exposition took place. If only I could make my own lectures that interesting. All I need is a Hollywood budget. All in all, it was an amusing distraction. Now if you excuse me, I have to get to a library, quickly! Posted by pj at 07:46 PM
